Paste your topic, aim and objectives. The assistant finds similar published studies, checks every number against the paper, and writes your sample size calculation with references, ready for your synopsis.
Free: 3 assistant searches a day, and the calculator without limits. No sign-up. No patient data needed.
Example resultSingle proportion
173participants
Prevalence 27% (Kumar et al., 2024), precision ±7%, 95% confidence: 155 from the formula, 173 after 10% non-response.

One place for every stage of your thesis
Start with sample size today. New tools will join the same website, so your topic and numbers carry forward from one step to the next.
New
Sample size assistant
Paste your topic and objectives. It finds published values, shows the sentence each number came from, and writes the calculation, a short version for the ethics committee and likely viva questions.
Turns your topic, objectives and sample size into a synopsis draft in your university's format.
Planned
Data analysis
Upload your data; the right test runs, assumptions are checked and the results are written up.
Planned
Thesis chapters
Introduction, review of literature, methods, results and discussion, with every citation checked against PubMed.
Planned
Journal paper
A manuscript in IMRaD format, built from your thesis and formatted for the journal you choose.
Planned
Poster and slides
A conference poster and a presentation, made from the same results and references.
From topic to Word file in three steps
1
Paste your topic and objectives
Or upload your synopsis. The assistant checks your aim and objectives and chooses the study design, with its reasons.
2
Choose a published value
It searches PubMed, reads the abstracts and shows each value with the sentence it came from. Pick the study that fits your setting.
3
Download the write-up
Formula, steps, final number and references in Word, in your university's font and margins, plus viva notes.
Numbers your examiner can check
Tested formulas
Charan & Biswas, Kelsey, Fleiss, Buderer and others, checked against hand calculations and published tables.
Every step shown
The write-up shows the formula, each input with its source, and every line of the calculation.
Checked against the paper
Every value the assistant uses appears word for word in the published abstract, with a link to PubMed.
Honest when patients are few
If your hospital sees fewer patients, the calculator shows the precision or power you can achieve, instead of bending the formula.
Made by a medical statistician
Designed around the questions postgraduate students bring to a statistics department every week.
Common questions
Is it free?
Yes. The calculator is free without limits, and the assistant gives 3 free searches a day. No account is needed.
Where do the expected values come from?
From published studies similar to yours: the prevalence, mean, standard deviation or correlation they report. The assistant finds them on PubMed, or you enter a value yourself in the calculator. Either way the study is cited and added to the reference list.
Can the AI make up a number?
The AI only copies numbers from abstracts. A number is used only if the sentence it was copied from appears word for word in the abstract and contains that number; anything else is dropped. All arithmetic is done by tested formulas, not by the AI.
Can I use the write-up in my synopsis or thesis?
Yes. Download it as a Word file, and check the design and values with your guide before you submit.
Is my data stored?
The calculator runs in your browser and sends nothing to us. The assistant sends your text to the AI to be read; we keep your topic, without your name, only if you tick the box that allows it. The privacy policy has the details.
What if I can enrol only a limited number of patients?
Choose “What my patients allow”. The calculator works out the precision or power that number gives and writes it up as a limitation, instead of changing your inputs.
